Course Study
At Lorain Preparatory Academy, we provide a standards-based curriculum that teaches students skills for college and career readiness. Our curriculum is built on the Ohio Learning Standards (OLS) for English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Electives (Art, Career Tech Exploration, Music, Physical Education). Electives at Lorain Preparatory Academy support whole-child development through a rich variety of creative, technical, and leadership-focused courses. These experiences help students discover new interests, build confidence, and develop real-world skills.
English Language Arts
Our English Language Arts program develops essential skills in reading, writing, and communication. Students engage with phonics, grammar, and vocabulary in the early grades, building confidence and fluency. As they grow, they analyze complex texts and deepen their comprehension and critical thinking abilities. Writing instruction supports creativity, clear expression, and strong academic performance across all subjects.
Math
Our Math curriculum blends foundational skills with problem-solving and critical thinking. Students engage with numbers, operations, and real-world applications through hands-on activities and technology-based tools. Lessons are designed to build confidence and mastery over time, preparing students for the challenges of algebra and beyond.
Science
Science at Lorain Preparatory Academy is interactive and inquiry-driven. Students explore life, Earth, and physical sciences through experiments, projects, and problem-solving activities. STEM education is integrated throughout the curriculum, with special emphasis on technology and engineering through programs like Sphero Robotics and Makerspace activities.
Music
Students develop musical skills and performance confidence through singing, instrumental work, and appreciation of musical traditions.
Physical Education
Through games, sports, and fitness activities, students build physical strength, coordination, teamwork, and lifelong healthy habits.
Art
Students express themselves creatively through hands-on projects that develop artistic techniques and appreciation.
Career Tech Exploration (Middle School)
Middle school students explore career pathways and develop early skills in fields like business, technology, and the arts.
Instructional Model
Our school is built on a strong foundation of high expectations for academic achievement for all students. Our instructional model has four key components to achieve strong academic results:
Individualized Instruction
Students participate in a variety of learning activities each day that individualize instruction for each subject area. Students receive whole class instruction, small group instruction, and individual instruction with teachers, technology and other curricular tools.
Properly Certified & Licensed Teachers
Our teachers meet the educator qualification requirements outlined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA): Bachelor’s degree, grade-level teaching license/certificate & ability to demonstrate subject area expertise. Our teachers are supported by trainers and participate in continuous, research-based professional development. Our teachers are accountable for student learning and rewarded for high quality performance.
More Time on Task
Our students receive double the instruction in ELA and Math to provide a strong foundation for all learning. Beginning with full-day Kindergarten, our school also follows a longer school day and school year than many other schools.
Short Cycle Assessments
Student knowledge of academic standards is assessed formally and informally in short cycles by each teacher. Our teachers adjust class-level and individual instruction based on student performance in these frequent intervals.
